Background of the Study
Fake news has emerged as a significant challenge to journalism, undermining public trust in media and fostering misinformation. In Kaduna North Local Government Area, Kaduna State, the proliferation of fake news through social media and traditional outlets poses risks to societal cohesion, political stability, and informed decision-making. Media laws are essential tools for combating fake news, providing a legal framework for regulating content, punishing offenders, and ensuring media accountability. However, the effectiveness of these laws is often limited by inadequate enforcement, lack of public awareness, and the misuse of legal provisions to stifle press freedom. The interaction between media laws and journalistic practices is critical to addressing fake news without compromising ethical standards or freedom of expression (Abubakar & Musa, 2024; Ibrahim, 2023). This study examines the role of media laws in combating fake news in Kaduna North, evaluating their effectiveness and identifying gaps in implementation.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the existence of media laws aimed at curbing fake news, their impact in Kaduna North remains limited. Fake news continues to thrive due to weak enforcement mechanisms, limited public understanding of these laws, and the lack of accountability among media practitioners. Moreover, concerns have been raised about the misuse of media laws to suppress legitimate journalism rather than addressing fake news. This dual challenge of combating misinformation while safeguarding press freedom necessitates a critical examination of the role and effectiveness of media laws in Kaduna North (Bello & Suleiman, 2024; Yusuf, 2023).
